What Causes Ant Issues?

The cause of ant infestations is warm weather, food, shelter, and water. Our homes and businesses often provide the last three. Combine this with Arizona’s hot climate and seasonal monsoon rains, and it becomes the perfect environment for ants to thrive.

Ants seek out water, especially in dry conditions. Fix leaks, eliminate standing water, and avoid overwatering landscaping near structures.

Keep landscaping trimmed, clear debris, and store trash in sealed containers. Ants nest in soil, mulch, and cracks in pavement, so regular upkeep helps reduce their habitat.

Check for gaps around doors, windows, and utility penetrations. Use caulk or weather stripping to block access points and prevent ants from entering your home or business.

Ants are highly adaptable, and many species have large, hidden colonies. Consistent service from a pest professional is the most effective way to keep infestations under control.

Small (2.5–4 mm), dark brown to black in color, with parallel lines on the head and thorax. In the Phoenix area, they tend to be a darker color or black.

Prefers sandy or gravelly soil, often nesting in cracks of pavement or between slabs. Indoors, they forage for food crumbs and grease.

Omnivorous, feeding on sweets, proteins, and grease. Known to engage in territorial battles with other ant colonies.

Pavement ants create small mounds of displaced soil near nest entrances, often mistaken for dirt piles.
Brachymyrmex patagonicus

Dark Rover Ant

Increasingly common in urban areas, particularly in the warmer months.

Low – A nuisance pest but not harmful.

Tiny (1.5–2 mm), dark brown to black, with short antennae.

Nests in soil, under mulch, or inside wall voids. Frequently found near light sources.

Forages for sweets and proteins, often creating visible trails indoors and outdoors.

Their colonies are often overlooked due to their tiny size but can become persistent if left unchecked.
Dorymyrmex insanus

Pyramid Ant

Common in desert environments and urban areas, particularly near dry, sandy soil.

Low – They are harmless to humans and rarely enter homes.

Small (2–3 mm), with a distinctive pyramid-shaped bump on the thorax. Usually black or black and red in color.

Nests in soil, often under rocks or debris. Colonies are typically small and inconspicuous.

Predominantly scavengers, feeding on dead insects and honeydew from aphids. Rarely seen indoors.

Their unique pyramid-shaped thorax makes them easy to identify among other ant species.

Harvester Ant

Common in desert and rural areas, less frequent in urban environments.

High – Their sting is painful and can cause allergic reactions.

Large (5–12 mm), reddish-brown with a robust build.

Nests in open, sandy areas, often marked by large, cleared circles devoid of vegetation.

Forages for seeds, creating visible trails. Aggressive when their nest is disturbed.

Harvester ants are known for collecting and storing seeds, which they process for food.
Tapinoma sessile

Odorous House Ant

Common indoors and outdoors, particularly during hot weather when they invade homes searching for water.

Low – Harmless but can contaminate food.

Small (2.5–3 mm), dark brown to black, and emit a rotten coconut-like odor when crushed.

Nests in wall voids, under sinks, or near moisture indoors. Outdoors, they nest under rocks, logs, or debris.
