What Causes Black Widow Issues?

Black widows are drawn to quiet, undisturbed areas where they can build their webs and find food. They are common in garages, sheds, and cluttered outdoor spaces. Arizona’s warm climate allows them to thrive year-round.

Keep garages, storage areas, and landscaping free of clutter. Remove piles of wood, debris, and excess vegetation.

Since black widows feed on other bugs, reducing the insect population helps minimize their presence.

Always wear gloves when handling stored items, as black widows tend to hide in dark, undisturbed spaces.

Black widows are venomous and should be handled carefully. Professional pest control ensures timely and effective removal.

Latrodectus hesperus

Western Black Widow

A common and potentially dangerous spider found throughout the metro area. Frequently encountered in yards, garages, sheds, and other sheltered outdoor spaces. Less likely to be found indoors but may enter homes through cracks or cluttered areas.

High – One of the most venomous spiders in North America. Their venom contains neurotoxins that can cause severe pain, muscle cramps, nausea, and, in rare cases, serious complications. Bites are particularly concerning for young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems.

Glossy black with a distinct red or orange hourglass marking on the underside of the abdomen. Females are larger and more venomous than males, typically reaching about 1.5 inches in length, including leg span.

Prefers dry, sheltered areas like woodpiles, rock crevices, storage boxes, and under eaves. Often builds irregular, messy webs in undisturbed locations close to the ground. Common around homes, especially in cluttered or poorly maintained outdoor areas.

Nocturnal and reclusive, black widows rarely leave their webs and prefer to stay hidden during the day. They are not aggressive but will bite if disturbed or threatened. Females tend to remain in one location, while males wander in search of mates.

Despite their reputation, black widow bites are rarely fatal due to modern medical treatment. Their silk is among the strongest in the spider world, capable of catching insects much larger than themselves. Females sometimes cannibalize males after mating, although this behavior is less common in the wild.
