What Causes Cricket Issues?

The cause of cricket infestations is a warm weather, food, shelter and water. Our homes often provide food, shelter and water. Combine this with our warm weather and mild winters it becomes a perfect environment for crickets.

Irrigated landscapes provide moisture critical to cricket lifecycles. Where possible, limit excessive moisture.

Keep grass trimmed and clear any debris or dense vegetation where crickets might hide and find common food sources which are smaller insects and decaying plant material.

Ensure weather stripping around exterior doors does not have any gaps.

Crickets thrive in our Arizona environment and consistent service from a pest professional is the most effective way to keep them under control.

Types of Crickets in Arizona

Acheta domesticus

House Cricket

Common throughout Arizona, particularly in urban and suburban areas. Frequently found in yards, garages, basements, and sometimes inside homes, especially during the warmer months. Often attracted to outdoor lighting at night.

Low – House crickets do not bite or pose direct health risks, but they can become a nuisance due to their loud chirping. In large numbers, they may damage fabrics, paper, and stored food items.

Small to medium-sized, light brown to tan with dark bands on the head. Adults grow to about ¾ to 1 inch in length. Long antennae and strong hind legs allow them to jump long distances. Males produce a distinctive chirping sound by rubbing their wings together.

Prefers warm, dry environments and is often found around homes, in garages, basements, and crawl spaces. Outdoors, they are commonly seen in gardens, under rocks, and near compost piles. They seek shelter in cracks, crevices, and cluttered areas.

Nocturnal and highly active, house crickets feed on a variety of organic materials, including plants, paper, fabric, and even other insects. They are drawn to light sources at night and may enter homes through open doors, windows, or small gaps in walls. Their chirping is used to attract mates and is more frequent in warm weather.

House crickets are commonly bred as feeder insects for reptiles, amphibians, and birds. Their chirping rate increases with temperature, and some scientists use cricket chirps to estimate outdoor temperatures. They can survive for long periods without food but require moisture to thrive.
Gryllus spp.

Field Cricket

Common in outdoor areas throughout Arizona, especially in fields, gardens, and near homes. More likely to be found outside than house crickets but may enter buildings in search of food or shelter, particularly during hot, dry conditions.

Low – Field crickets do not bite or pose a health risk but can become a nuisance due to their loud chirping, especially in large numbers. They may also damage plants, fabrics, and stored food items if they enter homes.

Larger and darker than house crickets, typically black or dark brown with a robust body. Adults grow to about ½ to 1.25 inches in length. Long antennae and strong hind legs allow them to jump far. Males produce a loud, rhythmic chirping sound to attract females.

Prefers grassy fields, gardens, compost piles, and under logs or rocks. Often found around homes near outdoor lighting, in garages, and sometimes inside basements. They seek shelter in cracks, under debris, and in dense vegetation.

Nocturnal and omnivorous, field crickets feed on plant material, decaying organic matter, and even other insects. They are highly attracted to lights at night, which can lead them into homes and businesses. Chirping increases during warm months and is used to attract mates.

Field crickets are a primary food source for many birds, reptiles, and amphibians. Their chirping rate correlates with temperature, and some people use the frequency of their calls to estimate outdoor temperatures. Unlike house crickets, they are more solitary and prefer to live outdoors rather than in buildings.
