What Causes Earwig Issues?

Earwigs are attracted to moisture and decaying plant material. Arizona’s irrigated landscapes and shaded areas around homes provide the perfect environment for them to thrive.

Avoid overwatering plants and ensure proper drainage around foundations.

Remove leaf litter, mulch, and excess vegetation where earwigs like to hide.

Install weather stripping and caulk gaps to prevent them from entering your home.

Earwig populations can become overwhelming, especially after monsoon season. Routine pest control treatments help keep them under control.

Types of Earwigs in Arizona

Forficula auricularia

Common Earwig

Frequently encountered in gardens, yards, and occasionally inside homes, especially during hot, dry weather. More of a nuisance than a pest, but their presence can be alarming due to their distinctive pincers.

Low – Earwigs do not pose a significant threat to humans. They may pinch if handled but do not carry venom or spread disease. However, they can damage plants and soft fruits in gardens.

Dark brown or reddish-brown with a long, slender body. Adults grow to about ½ to 1 inch in length. Characterized by prominent forceps-like pincers at the end of their abdomen, which are used for defense and mating displays.

Prefers dark, damp environments like mulch, leaf litter, under rocks, and in decaying wood. Often found in overwatered gardens, near leaky irrigation systems, or in shaded outdoor spaces. May enter homes through cracks or under doors, seeking moisture and shelter.

Nocturnal and primarily scavengers, feeding on decaying plant matter, fungi, and small insects. While they can use their pincers for defense, they are not aggressive. Attracted to moisture and may be found in bathrooms, kitchens, and basements.

Despite myths, earwigs do not crawl into human ears to lay eggs. Their name comes from an old European superstition. They are beneficial in some ecosystems as they help break down organic material and prey on small insect pests.
