What Causes Mosquitoes?

Standing water is a primary factor in mosquito populations. In Arizona, mosquitoes can breed year-round, even in the smallest amounts of stagnant water. Dripping outdoor faucets, birdbaths, backyard ponds, and neglected pools all create ideal breeding conditions. Mosquitoes are tricky as they can travel, so the source of these pests may be outside your direct control. Here are some tips for reducing the likelihood of mosquitoes on your property.

Tips for Reducing Mosquitoes

Regularly remove or refresh water in containers, bird baths, clogged gutters, and other stagnant water sources where mosquitoes breed. Also keep pools treated properly.

Keep grass trimmed and clear any debris or dense vegetation where mosquitoes might hide.

Ensure doors and windows seal properly and have intact screens to block mosquitoes from entering indoors.

Mosquitos are persistent pests and consistent service from a pest professional is the most effective way to keep them at bay. Our mosquito control program delivers regular treatments that disrupt breeding cycles and prevent mosquitoes from establishing on your property.

Common Mosquitoes in Arizona

Aedes aegypti

Yellow Fever Mosquitoes

Common in urban areas like Phoenix and Tucson. Thrives in artificial containers and human environments, especially during the warmer months.

High – Known vectors of diseases such as dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever. Their ability to transmit these viruses makes them a significant public health concern.

Small, dark mosquito with distinctive white markings on the legs and a lyre-shaped pattern on the thorax. Known for being aggressive daytime biters.

Breeds in small amounts of standing water, often found in flowerpots, tires, buckets, and other containers. Prefers human-made environments.

Daytime biter with a preference for human blood. Highly adaptive to urban settings and capable of laying eggs in water as shallow as a bottle cap. These mosquitoes can only fly short distances of a mile or so.

Eggs can survive for months in dry conditions, hatching only when exposed to water. Originally from Africa, they have adapted to climates around the world, including Arizona’s.
Culex Species

House Mosquitoes

Widespread across the state, especially in urban and suburban areas with stagnant water sources. Culex quinquefasciatus is particularly common in Phoenix.

Moderate to High – Primary vector of West Nile Virus and St. Louis encephalitis. These diseases pose risks to both humans and animals.

Light brown to tan mosquitoes with darker banding on their wings. Tend to be larger than Aedes mosquitoes and less aggressive.

Breeds in stagnant and polluted water, including storm drains, irrigation ditches, and unmaintained swimming pools.

Most active at dusk and dawn. They are opportunistic feeders and bite a variety of hosts, including humans and birds.

Culex mosquitoes are often called "bridge vectors" because they transfer diseases like West Nile Virus from birds to humans. Their larvae, known as wrigglers, are commonly found in stagnant water.
Anopheles Species

Malaria Mosquitoes

Less common than Aedes and Culex, but still present in rural and semi-rural areas with natural water sources.

Low – Historically associated with malaria, but malaria transmission is not currently a concern in Arizona.

Dark brown mosquitoes with long legs and a distinctive upward-tilted body posture when at rest. Typically larger than Aedes or Culex mosquitoes.

Breeds in clean water sources such as ponds, lakes, and marshy areas. Found in rural and desert regions.

Nocturnal feeders, primarily active during the evening and night. Prefer animals as hosts but will bite humans if available.

Anopheles mosquitoes were responsible for malaria outbreaks in the United States in the past, but control measures have greatly reduced their threat. Their larvae float parallel to the water's surface, unlike other species that hang downwards.
