Causes of Scorpion Infestations

It’s important to remember that our communities are built on top of scorpions’ natural habitat. That means there is scorpion activity in every neighborhood throughout the Phoenix metro area. Like any pest, they’re always searching for food, water, and shelter. Controlling these factors can prevent everyday scorpion activity from escalating into a full-blown infestation. Check out these helpful tips for managing scorpions.

Tips for Avoiding Scorpion Infestations

Scorpions can slip through gaps as small as 1/8th of an inch. Seal cracks around doors, windows, and your home’s foundation. Install door sweeps, caulk openings, and repair damaged screens to keep them out.

Scorpions are drawn to moisture. Fix leaky faucets, pipes, and irrigation systems. Avoid overwatering and eliminate any standing water around your property.

Scorpions hide in clutter. Remove piles of wood, rocks, and debris from your yard. Inside, keep garages, basements, and closets organized and free of unnecessary clutter.

Trim back bushes, trees, and palm fronds that touch your home. Keep grass short and avoid dense ground cover near the foundation. Scorpions look for shady, cool spots during the day.

Scorpions are resilient pests, and consistent, year-round service is the most effective way to keep them under control. Our Blue Sky 365 program ensures that treatments are applied on a regular schedule to create a barrier of protection for your home to prevent scorpions from re-establishing themselves.

Debbie V

"Never had scorpions in the twenty years that I have lived in my home. After construction on apartments next to my neighborhood now we were finding them everywhere. I called Blue Sky and they have been treating my house and yard for about 3 years now and we don’t see them anymore."

A Mayor

"We had seen scorpions in past months, so we called Blue Sky hearing they had a great reputation. Stephen came by to spray our yard. After doing a better job of spraying than we'd ever seen from precious companies, he explained what he'd done and what to expect in the next couple of weeks. He answered all of our questions and was very thorough and professional."

John Johnson

"Just had Cameron from Bluesky pest control stop buy the house for our scheduled service. I always appreciate the professionalism of the techs and how thorough of a job they do. Ever since I started using Bluesky I have not had any issues with any kind of bug, including scorpions. Highly recommend their service!"

Common Scorpions in Arizona

Centruroides Sculpturatus

Arizona Bark Scorpion

The most common and problematic scorpion in the metro area. Highly adapted to urban environments and frequently encountered indoors.

High – This is the most venomous scorpion in America. Stings cause intense pain, numbness, and sometimes severe allergic reactions. Young children and elderly individuals are most at risk.

Small, slender, and light brown or tan. Adults typically grow to about 2.5-3 inches. Has long, thin pincers and a slightly curved tail, giving it a delicate appearance.

Common in desert areas but thrives in urban settings. Often found in homes, garages, and other structures. Hides under rocks, bark, palm trees, and inside crevices during the day, emerging at night to hunt.

Nocturnal and adept climbers – they can scale walls, trees, and even hang from ceilings. Can squeeze into tiny gaps as small as 1/8th of an inch, making them tough to keep out of homes.

Glows under UV light, making them easy to spot at night with a blacklight. Can play dead when threatened, only to scuttle away when the danger passes.
Paravaejovis Spinigerus

Striped Tail Scorpion

Less common indoors but frequently seen around gardens, rock piles, and desert landscaping.

Moderate – Its sting is painful but not dangerous to most people, similar to a wasp or bee sting. Can cause localized swelling and discomfort but rarely results in severe reactions.

Medium-sized, growing to about 2 inches. Yellowish or tan with distinct dark stripes running along the length of its tail. Stockier and less slender than the bark scorpion.

Primarily found outdoors in the desert, under rocks, logs, and debris. Occasionally enters homes, usually through cracks in walls or foundations.

Ground-dwelling and less likely to climb compared to the bark scorpion. Solitary and territorial, typically seen alone.

Also known as the “Devil Scorpion” due to its aggressive appearance and striped tail. When threatened, it often curls up tightly or plays dead.
Hadrurus Arizonensis

Giant Desert Hairy Scorpion

Frequently seen in desert-adjacent areas and less urbanized parts of the metro area. Less likely to invade homes but may wander inside during monsoon season.

Low – Despite its intimidating size, its venom is mild, similar to a bee sting. More likely to pinch with its strong pincers than sting when threatened.

The largest scorpion in North America, growing up to 5.5 inches long. Yellowish body with a darker, sometimes brown, back. Covered in fine hairs, which help it sense vibrations.

Prefers open desert areas but may venture into residential areas, especially after heavy rains. Found in burrows, under rocks, or in desert vegetation.

Mostly burrowing but emerges at night to hunt insects and other small prey. Territorial but non-aggressive unless provoked.

Its hairs help detect movement in total darkness, making it an efficient nocturnal hunter. It hunts and eats other scorpions including bark scorpions and their own species.
