Silverfish Control in Arizona

Silverfish in Arizona are difficult to see in detail without a magnifying glass because they’re less than an inch long, but they resemble a catfish. Instead of fins, however, they have six legs as well as pinchers sticking out of their behinds. What Causes Silverfish Issues?

Silverfish infestations are caused by humidity, food sources, and shelter. They are drawn to paper, fabrics, and starch-based materials, making storage areas and bathrooms common hotspots.

Use dehumidifiers to ensure proper ventilation, especially in bathrooms, basements, and attics.

Keep books, papers, and clothing in sealed containers to prevent silverfish damage.

Silverfish feed on starches, glue, and fabric fibers. Keeping spaces clean and clutter-free minimizes their food supply.

Silverfish are nocturnal and can be hard to detect. Routine pest control services help prevent infestations before they become a problem.

Types of Silverfish in Arizona

Lepisma saccharinum

Silverfish

Common in homes and buildings, particularly in humid or damp areas such as bathrooms, kitchens, and basements. Often found in closets, attics, and storage spaces where paper and fabric are present.

Low – Silverfish do not bite or transmit diseases but can cause damage to books, wallpaper, clothing, and other starchy materials. Their presence in large numbers can be a nuisance, especially in homes with poor moisture control.

Small, wingless insects with a silvery-gray, metallic sheen. Their bodies are elongated and taper at the end, resembling a fish-like shape. Adults grow to about ½ to ¾ inch in length and have long antennae and three bristle-like appendages at the rear.

Prefers dark, humid environments with consistent warmth and access to food sources like paper, glue, fabric, and starchy materials. Commonly found in bathrooms, basements, under sinks, and in stored cardboard boxes. Attracted to moisture and can be more prevalent in homes with leaks or high humidity.

Nocturnal and fast-moving, silverfish are elusive and prefer to hide in cracks and crevices during the day. They are scavengers, feeding on carbohydrates found in household items like wallpaper paste, book bindings, and even some textiles. Can live for several years and survive long periods without food.

Silverfish are among the most primitive insects, having remained relatively unchanged for over 400 million years. Unlike many pests, they do not require standing water to survive but need humidity to thrive. Their fast, darting movements and fish-like appearance contribute to their name.
